Situated approximately 22kms from Perth CBD, Craigie is one of 4 "Whitfords" suburbs that resulted from the state government rezoning a large parcel of coastal land for development in 1969.
Craigie was chosen as a suburb name in 1970 and honour's an early councillor of the City of Wanneroo who did much of the work developing the city.
Initially situated on the fringes of the northern corridor, it would take several years before the suburb could offer the infrastructure of shops, services and transport, however because of it's affordable price it still remained popular with first home buyers keen to follow the great Australian dream of owning their own home.
Now, 40 years on, Craigie is a suburb which has been transformed by an ever expanding population and an ever increasing urban sprawl. No longer a suburb on the fringes of civilization, Craigie is now located at the epicentre of the northern suburbs and offers easy access to all of the regions major attractions.
The Great Outdoor's
Situated approximately 2kms from the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean and the golden sands of Mullaloo beach, Craigie is ideally located to maximise the use and enjoyment of Perth's long hot summers ....at the beach!
Ideal for families with kids, dogs, joggers or sports enthusiasts, the suburb offers plenty of rolling lawns and sporting facilities including Otago Park, Warrandyte Reserve and Adelaide Park.
Another major tourist attraction, Hillary's Marina is located within a few kilometres of Craigie and offers all year round attractions such as: speciality shops, restaurants, bars, marina, aquarium, fairground rides and of course...the beach.
Shopping & Entertainment
Perfect for shopaholics, Craigie boasts easy access to all major local shopping facilities including: Whitford City, Lakeside Joondalup & Karrinyup as well as it's very own Craigie Plaza which features a local supermarket and tavern as well as speciality shops, take away foods and state of the art medical / dental facilities.
Road / Rail Access
Ideally located for Perth commuters, Craigie offers easy freeway and rail access to Perth from both its northern and southern boundaries with train stations located at Edgewater and Whitford's respectively.
In regards to younger students the suburb is well catered for with a relatively new primary school situated on Spinaway Street and a long established Catholic primary school situated on Camberwarra Drive.
With regards to secondary education, students are required to attend the neighbouring suburbs of either Beldon or Padbury.
Craigie Leisure Centre
Located on the southern boundary of the suburb, the Craigie Leisure Centre offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools plus a gymnasium and plenty of fun sporting recreations including indoor soccer, cricket and basketball etc.
The suburb is due to be transformed further over the next few years with several new housing opportunities being offered via:
Craigie High School development site: situated on the corner of Camberwarra Drive & Arawa Place, the old Craigie High School site is due to be developed by Landcorp as early as next year and will offer a brand new housing development of approximately 150 lots.
Craigie Primary School development site: situated on Currajong Crescent we can tell you that this development site will offer approximately 46 new homesteads.
Draft Local Housing Strategy: The City of Joondalup has proposed through it's draft local housing strategy to change the zoning of all properties on the west side of Marmion Avenue, i.e. those that fall between the boundaries of Marmion Avenue, Whitfords Avenue, Craigie Drive and Eddystone Avenue.
The proposal is to amend the current R20 zoning to a dual R20/R40 zoning. If implemented this new zoning will allow a large percentage of home owners to sub-divide their current single residential lots which will well and truly change the landscape of Craigie.
Health is always well-taken care of with a brand new medical and dentist center located close to the mini post office. You’ll find several clinics in between houses with classic styles. The suburb can also bring you near the suburbs of Leederville, Mindarie, Joondalup, and Mullaloo in just a few minutes.
There’s always time for fun with plenty of spots that keep locals and tourists entertained year round long. Just five to ten minutes away from any point in the suburb, Joondalup City and Whitfords Shopping Centres have a significant collection of shops that meet your needs. More development springs from Hillarys Marina, which is Craigie’s hotspot for recommended dining and nightlife. Easy access to all these are ensured with train and bus transport linking the community. You’re within a mere distance from everywhere else with convenient access to the freeway. Weekend seaside adventures will always be just a short drive from home. There’s a fantastic leisure center and gym to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Serving as the suburb’s pride and joy, Craigie Tavern: Bull and Bush Restaurant offers a great venue to hang out with new found friends.
With all these and more, you can expect more developments on the way. Anticipating an influx of newcomers, Craigie has built a new housing development at the Old Craigie High School Site.
